Jerry H. Gurwitz, MD

Alan S. Go, MDDr. Gurwitz serves as Executive Director of the Meyers Primary Care Institute of Worcester, Massachusetts (a member of the HMO Research Network), which is a joint endeavor of Fallon Community Health Plan, Fallon Clinic Foundation, and the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Dr. Gurwitz holds the Dr. John Meyers Professorship in Primary Care Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he also serves as Chief of the Division of Geriatric Medicine.

Dr. Gurwitz is an academic geriatrician with extensive expertise in cardiovascular epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology, and patient safety research relevant to the elderly patient population. Dr. Gurwitz has utilized a variety of clinical and administrative databases (e.g., New Jersey Medicaid Program, Worcester Heart Attack Study, National Registry of Myocardial Infarction, Established Populations for Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly, and the HMORN CERT) for his research into the clinical epidemiology and management of coronary disease and other CVD conditions. Dr. Gurwitz has collaborated closely with Dr. Robert Goldberg on several NHLBI-funded disease surveillance systems in the Central Massachusetts population, including the Worcester Heart Attack Study and the Worcester Heart Failure Study. He has also served as PI of several AHRQ-funded studies focused on improving the safety of drug therapy in older adults including the use of anticoagulant therapy. In 2006, Dr. Gurwitz was recognized for his research contributions related to medication safety by the National Quality Forum and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations with the John M. Eisenberg Award for Patient Safety and Quality Research.
